What is Anxiety

It is quite normal to experience feelings of anxiety from time to time which is a natural response to stress, uncertainty or changes in our lives. However for some people anxiety and stress can affect our daily lives leading to physical and mental health difficulties.

Anxiety is thought to be the most common mental health condition affecting around 30% of us at some point during our lives. As humans we have evolved to protect ourselves through the “fight, flight or freeze” reaction. If our brain notice a potential threat, the brain then releases hormones including adrenaline and cortisol  which help to prepare us to run away, fight or freeze. these hormones act by making our hearts beat faster in order that blood can be sent to where it is needed most.

However in our modern day society the “”fight, flight or freeze” reaction can easily be activated when there is no physical danger present the result of which is that we may start to internalise our emotions making it very difficult to turn off this response. Anxiety starts to become a mental health problem when it begins to have an affect upon out daily lives.
